Summary of the academic conference “The Augustów Roundup and Its Aftermath: The Current State of Research and Proposals for the Future”
On 11–12 September 2023, the Pilecki Institute organized the academic conference “The Augustów Roundup and Its Aftermath: The Current State of Research and Proposals for the Future”.
The speakers at the event were eminent representatives of academic and scientific circles, who shared their knowledge on the Augustów Roundup with the gathered guests.
In the first part of the conference, Prof. Małgorzata Dajnowicz presented a paper on the collection of documents concerning the Augustów Roundup, this on the basis of materials gathered by Alicja Maciejowska, while Dr. Marcin Zwolski and Dr. Jarosław Schabieński presented the history of “Dom Turka” and the attempts made by its former owner, Leon Rechtman, to reclaim his property.
The second part opened with a paper by Prof. Adam Miodowski, who described the patriotic attitudes among the residents of the Augustów region during World War II. Next, Prof. Jan Snopko and Mr. Tadeusz Radziwonowicz discussed the documents of the Office of Public Security pertaining to the Augustów Roundup, as well as the actions and movements of Soviet troops after 18 July 1945.
In the last part of the conference, Dr. Łukasz Faszcza presented the scientific and educational activities of the Pilecki Institute with regard to the Augustów Roundup, while Dr. Agnieszka Konik analyzed the results of a survey on knowledge and memory about the Augustów Roundup.
Each part of the conference was followed by a lively discussion between our experts and the audience, who attended the event in large numbers.
The second day of the conference began with a welcome address to the participants from the Pilecki Institute’s management and a presentation by Dr. Teresa Kaczorowska, who delivered a paper on “The Girls of the Augustów Roundup”. Next, Dr. Krzysztof Skłodowski presented the findings of his research concerning the possible use of personal files and decorations from the collections of the Central Military Archives, while Danuta and Zbigniew Kaszlej gave papers on the current state of research concerning the number of Victims of the Augustów Roundup, discussing related problems and research proposals. The last presentation on the second day of the conference was delivered by Mrs. Barbara Bojaryn-Kazberuk, who summarized a number of issues pertaining to the Augustów Roundup. The conference was concluded with a discussion between the speakers and our big audience.
We are proud and happy to announce that the first edition of the Pilecki Institute’s academic conference has come to a conclusion – and that these two content-packed days featured presentations from eminent figures. These acclaimed scholars, as well as representatives of academic and scientific circles, presented numerous research findings, thus enabling us to deepen and systematize our knowledge about those tragic events.
